NSES indices are primarily calculated using a market capitalization-weighted methodology, where companies with larger market caps have a greater impact on the index. The indices are also free-float adjusted, meaning only shares available for public trading are included in the calculation. The East Africa Securities Index (EASI) follows a similar methodology but includes constituent companies from multiple exchanges across East Africa, with quarterly rebalancing to ensure the index remains representative of the regional market.
While you cannot invest directly in an index, there are several investment products that track the performance of NSES indices. These include Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that aim to replicate the index performance, index futures contracts for derivatives trading, and structured products based on index performance. Several fund managers also offer index tracker funds that aim to match the performance of specific indices. Contact your broker or financial advisor to discuss which index-based investment products might be suitable for your investment needs.
The rebalancing schedule varies by index. The NSES Composite Index and sector indices are typically rebalanced quarterly to account for changes in market capitalization, new listings, delistings, and corporate actions. The East Africa Securities Index (EASI) is rebalanced quarterly, with constituent review conducted annually to ensure the index continues to represent the leading companies across the region. Special rebalancings may also occur in response to significant market events, mergers, acquisitions, or other corporate actions.
Indices serve multiple crucial functions in financial markets. They provide benchmarks for measuring market and investment performance, enable investors to track market movements and trends, serve as the basis for index-linked investment products, and provide standardized exposure to specific markets or sectors. They also function as important indicators of economic health and market sentiment, helping investors and policymakers gauge market conditions. For developing markets like Somalia, robust index methodologies increase market transparency and credibility with international investors.
